not ghostly but a creepy book that was disturbing but still a good read was The Wasp Factory by Iain Banks

What is the Atheist interpretation of the Don Piper incident?
I’m not trying to manipulate you or patronise you, I just want your views as to what happened.
Don was a friend of my father’s, and both were honest men. Don was driving home from a conference and doing 60 over a bridge when a truck doing 70 collided with him, absolutely mashing up his car. Paramedics arrived and pronounced Don dead after carrying out the usual procedures. His body was completely shredded to pieces and there was no possibility of his living. The paramedics left him and went to help other victims.
A priest came along and offered to pray for Don, as he felt that God had told him to do so. He finally persuaded them to let him do so, and so he somehow crawled in through the boot and rested a hand on Don’s shoulder, and began to pray. An hour and a half passed, and the priest became emotional and began to sing. Suddenly, he heard a voice singing with him, and it was Don. He had checked his pulse frequently during his prayers, but now it was active again.
Don claims that during his time dead, he went to heaven. He describes what he saw in his book. He talks about everything being incomprehensibly unreal and bright, but yet he could handle it without squinting, and he could understand it there. He said that he saw colours he’d never seen before and heard things that you would never hear on earth. He said it was literally another dimension. You can’t imagine or dream something that you couldn’t experience on earth, as he claims.
Ok, for the purpose of the question can we all assume that his testimony is honest and he’s not lying? What would be your explanations for the incident?

well I knew you would all say "He’s obviously lying" so I mean answer assuming that he truly believes this and is not making it up.
My first impulse is to believe that someone invented the story in order to make money. However, I’ll give the guy the benefit of the doubt this time.
Medically speaking, when the brain starts to shut down it is flooded by a chemical that causes intense and very realistic hallucinations. Those hallucinations tend to take as subject matter images and ideas that are already part of the person’s belief system.

It’s clearly an experience that Don’t brain chemistry gave him. And it’s interesting to note that all Near Death Experiences conform to the individual’s own cultural notion of what an afterlife is.
